I'm happy with this. I while back I looked at the coaching candidates' records without any thought to who the coach was, and Roy was definitely up there. He has a very good win-loss record. It's risky of course in that any time you hire a coach right out of the junior ranks it's risky. But, it's not like Gretzky where he became the head coach with no other experience. Roy has been a head coach for almost a decade now. He knows how to teach and motivate young guys, and he'll get respect from veterans simply because of who he is. I think he'll do a good job of getting the most out of our young guys.

And hey, at the very least, his quotes after games will be a million times better than Sacco's.

I still think Sherman is a lame duck GM and is just a cap/numbers guy now. Basically it's all Sakic and I guess Roy is directly under him.

Typically the coach reports to the GM, who reports to the VP....I think this is a good move but interesting how the dynamics will work

Greatest news I have heard since the Avs won the draft lottery. Some people have doubts but I am super excited about the future of the franchise. I think someone said this the other day but I was tired of the lack of accountability and passion that Sacco seemed to show the last couple of seasons. I love Roy's winning attitude and passion for the game. I think it will translate better than Sacco's method of motivating and coaching the team. Welcome back to the Avs Roy!

I hear what you're saying Gary, and I agree, I saw them do the same things over and over under Sacco. I was willing to give him the "they're young, they will learn and improve" benefit of the doubt for his first couple years, but despite their youth and despite the fact that certain individual players did improve, the team never seemed to put it together under Sacco.

Where we may not agree is in your opinion that Roy will be any more successful demanding a certain type of play from his guys than Sacco was. As far as accountability is concerned, Sacco did try benching and scratching guys at various points, and people criticized him for overuse of the "doghouse." I don't know what tool Roy will have at his disposal that Sacco didn't have. In retrospect, I don't think players ignored Sacco, I just don't think he taught them the right things.

In other words, I'm less interested in Roy's ability to "motivate" and hold players accountable than I am in his ability to teach all the various intricacies of hockey to all the various types of people & personalities he will have on his roster. That's the angle from which I'm viewing Roy, and that's why I have concerns, because I'm not at all convinced that the knowledge of the game required to coach teenagers is the same knowledge required to coach professionals.

Very true, if Roy is not the next Avs coach it will be because he did not receive enough insurance about the financial commitment of ownership and everybody should be concerned about it.
Whoever the coach, if Kroenke does not want to spend there is no way any gifted group of young players will beat a seasoned group of recognized stars and veterans.
The Avs should begin to rate their group not based on what they think their potential is but based on what is the level of their competitors is.

I can't disagree w/ you Jimbo. I think I was mostly reacting to what has frustrated me watching the Avs under Sacco, and that is a perceived (by me) lack of accountability on the part of the players. Maybe a better way to put it would be what appeared to be a lack of coaching players to actually eliminate mistakes and play better. I saw the same defensive mistakes over and over and actually year after year. If I'm the coach I sit down with the player, show the film and tell then what I want them to do next time. I even have an assistant do it between periods. If they don't do it, they munch nachos from the press box.

Maybe that was going on but I doubt it. It was more "play harder", "play smarter", "start the game on time", etc. I was voicing that I think Roy would demand certain things of the players and hold them to it.

I'd rather watch a team coached by McLellan than Vigneault but I think they would both be quality hires. (For arguments sake that is. I realize McLellan isn't in the picture.)

I was just curious if a person that didn't want Vigneault wouldn't want McLellan since they both have the same knock against them.

Corey Schneider is a far superior goalie to anything the Avs currently have in the NHL or anywhere else in their system. You might want to look in the mirror and see what a disaster Colorado's goaltending situation is. Varlamov is a headcase, and Gigure is ancient. Pickard is terrible too.

scrap this roy business and pick up someone proven, whether it's vigneault, tippett, ruff, etc.. avs can't repay roy for the successes he's afforded them but they tried the coach with no nhl experience last time and now they're kicking off the draft this year.
