All Things Avs: Why, why, why did the Avs trade Chris Drury again?

  • D L · 1 year ago
Instead we get to see former Avs Steve Reinprecht and Radim Vrbata who will probably team up for the game-winning goal AGAINST us. Again. (That Vrbata for Bates Battaglia trade turned out to be another gem.)

Not to mention Morris and former Avs prospect Keith Ballard who have become pretty solid D-men for the Coyotes.

Lacroix redeemed the Vrbata trade by trading Battaglia for Konowalchuk. Anyway, yes, the Drury trade was one of the worst ever. Not only did we lose Captain Clutch, but we lost Yelle. The Messier-Yelle-Podein line was one of our most energetic, consistant grind lines ever. As much as I wish we still had Drury, we probably wouldn't have been able to afford to keep him until now.

I'm so tired of hearing this. It just wasn't the end of the world! If he IS so great why can't AD or anyone else explain why he has bounced around the league? Maybe those teams know something we don't, hmmm? His year in Buffalo was a flash in the pan.

I think the Avs made the right move by letting Drury go and keeping Hejduk long term. Hejduk makes half (?) what Drury makes and produces the same or better stats. In addition, Drury has always been a weak D player, look at his career +/-, it is +4 !!! That is VERY bad for a guy who has ALWAYS been on winning teams. Hejduk is a +148 for his career.

Ok, that is the tangible, but everyone's case is always built on the intangible. Fair enough but I really think that the Little League Legend of 1409 needs to be given a rest! Who cares? It really has nothing to do with today, or hockey. What team has he led to a Cup? He wore a C as a co-capt in Buf, big deal. This guy has been riding an over-rated reputation for a long time.

Just this morning I watched the 2000 semi's against Detroit (THANK YOU NHL NETWORK!). Av's owned that series, and as I was watching it, Drury makes this great move right-to-left to beat osgood in overtime (of game 4 i think?). I just shook my head, it was one of the many clutch goals he had in those grinding series against detroit and dallas. Dru has a quote 'In Colorado they say they like me, then trade me. In Calgary they say they like me, then trade me. I just don't get it...' I don't either...

I'm still waiting for a decent explanation as to why Tanguay had to go. I don't mind Leopold, especially when he's healthy, so my comments are not about that. But I still don't get to this day why we had to get rid of Tanguay. I know reason number one is that it was about the money, but I also stick by the theory that if a team wants someone bad enough they find a way to keep them.

That Drury trade was plain silly it is the all time blunder in Avalanche history. But I do want to say, at least we had a GM that would make a trade, right now we have a GM that likes to sit on his hands, and pray that magically we become a contender again.

If anyone were to make me choose between Stastny and Drury, I will take Stastny EVERY TIME. THe Rangers and any other team can have Drury.

I'm so tired of hearing this. Drury was AWFUL in his last year in Denver. Absolutely AWFUL. People are in love with about six or seven moments from his career and they overlook the fact that he is NOT a franchise changing player the rest of the time.

Get over it already. He is gone, and even if they had kept him, he'd be gone by now anyway because they never would have been able to afford to keep him.

Losing Drury, was tough, but why doesn't any of the media ever bring up the fact that we lost Robyn Regehr in that ill fated Fluery Trade?! Think about what the blue line would be like now? NOW that is the worst trade the Avs have ever made - BY FAR!
  • jennyjenjen · 1 year ago
I guess it wouldn't be fun to pick on you about watching VHS since you are apparently quite aware of how, um, SILLY that sounds!.... ;)

I agree with the comment about Regehr. Dingman? And Fleury?! Come on, that was ridiculous. Totally ridiculous. Hey, who scouted Morris anyways? Would you happen to know?

I live in NYC now and bought a Drury Rangers jersey to keep on supporting him individually as a player. However, the resistance and questioning of Drury from Rangers fans is amazing. They somehow fail to realize that Drury isn't a a top scoring forward but rather is the kind of guy that grabs the clutch goal at the key moment. With all the hype of Gomez and Drury topping off the Rangers fantasy team on ice, people fail to understand the game he plays as opposed to the hype he brought. As as Av's fan, best I can do is refer to his glory days in Colorado for all the backing I need to why Drury is one of the best players in the NHL, hands down.

For all of you who are still wailing away for Drury because he was SOOOO clutch... Marek Svatos has 18 regular season game winning goals in his four years with the Avs. Drury had 16 in the years he was here... REALLY, he was THAT clutch. Sorry, but a few good moments don't make a player a franchise.

I'm sure it's been mentioned but had we not traded Drury, we would not have got Statsny. The pick that we secured by shipping Mr. Little League World Series MVP was the pick that landed the franchise's future center extraordinare.

Plus, speculation abounds that Drury is a headcase in the lockerroom. Why was it that Briere wanted out of Buffalo so badly that he'd go to Philly (who at the time, was coming off of their worst year as a franchise)? Besides that hefty contract of course...ha ha.
