All Things Avs: Zeiler didn’t mean it, will be in the lineup tonight

  • BiB · 1 year ago
I'm thinking of a movie title for tonight's game: There Will be Blood. Zeiler's. And lots of it, hopefully. I don't want anyone to go Bertuzzi out there, but he needs to pay a price.
  • Will · 1 year ago
I didn't really think that it was a 'dirty' hit. By that I mean that I don't think that he intended to injure Foote. He was trying to make a play, and we all saw the way that it went. The suspension was warranted, but he didn't deserve any more than 3 games for it.

Not a big deal one way or the other. If Laperriere scraps with him fine, if he doesn't, that's fine also.

The team should be focused on playing better. They were very fortunate to get three points in the last couple of games, and aren't blowing anyones' hair back here. They look decidedly mediocre, and should focus on that.

Time to make him pay a price, in the old days that price would have been paid during the last game, this is why this stuff happens more often now. The code is/was if you can see the numbers on the back of the Jersey you dont hit the guy or you risk being put out of commision yourself. Player's think/know they can get away with this type of thing now. I am interested to see what happens here tonight, this will depend on how the coach feels but I know how the players feel, just ask Lappy!

    Hey AD,

Pretty good response from the kid; but then again the kid has had timeto think about his response. I would be very disappointed in the Avs if they do not settle this tonight. But once it is done...it should be done. I do want to see someone else besides Lappy step up on this matter; its always him, time for the almost rookies to respond, let them do their duty.

Maybe we could just try to win the wars and not these meaningless battles. The kid made a youthful error, paid with a suspension, and is sorry, so let's move on.

Save it all for the beating Bertuzzi still severely needs. At least Zeiler didn't say, "It is what it is." Words that still make me boil.

Let's hope the team doesn't play catch-up all night so we can see another one point game. It's time we had a blow-out in our favor.

I think Zeiler already paid for his hit: he lost pay for 3 games. I don't necessarily think the hit had any intention behind it, he was just a kid looking to establish himself as an everyday NHLer.

The biggest disappoinment is that Zeiler is back playing before Foote. That is the big problem with how the NHL hands out suspensions. If Zeiler's actions were punishable by suspension, then that suspension should equate to the length of the injuries. If the NHL had that policy in place, Bertuzzi would be a footnote to the game by now.

    Adrian,

You went from calling it a dirty hit and Zeiler a cheap shot artist to saying he seems like a good kid and let's hope nothing gets out of hand tonight. What gives?

"Oh, and tell Zeiler to keep his head up when he comes into the Pepsi Center next time - if you haven’t sent him to Manchester by then."

". The dirty part was the extension of the arm and shoulder - forgetting the fact that Foote’s back was turned to him."

"Foote’s upper back (neck) is still bothering him, and this mysterious knee injury has also crept into the situation. Injuries like these are what can happen when a (stiff, no-talent, cheap-shot artist) forward like John Zeiler runs you from behind."

I think there's plenty of water under the bridge on this one. Foote is skating, the kid was disciplined by the league promptly and appropriately. I agree with those who've said the focus needs to be on winning the game. The Avs can't afford to hold grudges at the expense of their focus and the overall objective of winning hockey games.

AB, are you Chris from the ng world?

I agree about the just needing to pull their heads out and play better and more consistently. And you know what struck me like a brick wall the other day listening to Granato on the radio? The Avs have gone from an organization where anything less than competing for a cup was unacceptable to an organization hell bent on just trying to sell us hard on mediocrity. Depressing.

    Adrian:

How come Cody McLeod wasn't held to the Zeiler standard for criticism after McLeod's hit against that Canuck the other night? Seems like a double-standard on your part.
  • John D. · 1 year ago
I agree that it should be someone else besides Lappy. One of the Cody's have to step up....

BiB, filmar, EAF: Perhaps you should give us your addresses. Zeiler was never after blood, but if you want blood, we can arrange that plenty of yours is spread around. The premeditated spilling of blood is what the suspension is designed to stop, but if you want it, spill your own.
  • Adrian Dater · 1 year ago
    Jobber,
You apparently didn't read my blog "Avs-Canucks, Postgame thoughts", where I ripped McLeod for his hit on Bieksa.
As for other sentiments here that I changed my tune from wanting "revenge" on Zeiler to saying something like "give him a break", I would say to any player to keep his head up in a game. And I'm not excusing the hit he made (and he paid a penalty, with a three-game suspension and nearly $9,000 in salary foreiture).
But I never advocated pure debilitating injury as "revenge."

Seems too many comments in this forum are abusive, obscene, and/or threatening...the league punished Zeiler, and more blood is not the way to continue.
  • Jobber · 1 year ago
Oh, I read the blog. That was hardly a 'rip job' by you, AD. You called McLeod's hit a 'dumb penalty' and moved on to other things pretty quickly. There wasn't much to choose between the two hits, but one got considerably more coverage than the other.

    Just sayin'

Zeiler did alot better against lappy than I thought he would.
  • Ryan · 1 year ago
Its good to hear that he feels bad about it, however, it was also nice to see Lappy...making sure Zeiler knows he did wrong. Go Lappy!
  • Amy R. · 1 year ago
Zeiler did the right thing and let Lappy straighten him out . . . . hopefully he earned some respect from his teammates tonight - he definitely earned some respect from me at the very least.

    Score settled.

Amy R.: Smartest non-journalist on the blog tonight.

That's hockey, folks. Guys go in hard, it IS a fast game, guys get hurt (accidental or not), they fight to pay it back, life goes on. You watch the next Canucks game, McLeod will definitely have to go through the same process. He'll take it just like he did tonight, with open arms. If you don't like it, watch poker or basketball or something.
